West Mackinac

West Mackinac

U.S. Route 2 is a scenic highway that spans 300 miles across the Upper Peninsula, ending in St. Ignace. Drivers are treated to unimpeded views of Lake Michigan to the south and wilderness to the north. Sections of U.S. 2 are distinguished as a Pure Michigan Byway and are included in Great Lakes Circle Tours in recognition of the coastal beauty along the route. Just about 10 miles outside of St. Ignace U.S. 2 comes up directly against the sandy shoreline of northern Lake Michigan. Find a spot to pull your car over along the highway and break out the beach gear. Walk down the small dunes and set up for a day in the sun on the small, quiet, beautiful beach area.

Travel a bit further west on U.S. 2 until you reach Cut River Bridge and roadside park. Enjoy a hike along the various trails in the park, or venture down to the mouth of the Cut River Gorge. The bridge was built in 1947 and is 641 feet long. It is one of only two cantilevered deck truss bridges in Michigan. You can walk underneath the bridge to admire the engineering and to knock on the troll door to see who might be home.

For lunch or dinner, continue driving down U.S. 2 until you make it to Moo Fin Fries in Naubinway. The burger restaurant and ice cream shop offers local, grass fed, beef hamburgers, locally caught whitefish, fresh cut french fries, and premium ice cream. Munch on your food inside or enjoy the weather at a table on the front porch.
